Our event speakers will discuss the impacts of the pandemic on tribal governments and how leadership is looking to govern post-pandemic era.
Governor Johnson
John R. Johnson is the current Governor of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. Prior to becoming the Governor of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, Johnson practiced as an Ophthalmic Finisher -Dispenser for 35 years. He established his own optical business in 2004. He has been married to his wife, Janet, for 45 years, and has two adult children.
President Parton
Terri Parton, the first elected female President of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, has served as President since 2012. She has worked at the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes for over 25 years. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Southern Nazarene University, Certificates from Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business, and a Master of Jurisprudence in Indian Law from the University of Tulsa.
Speaker Ruiz
Travis Ruiz is the Arapaho District 3 Legislator and current Speaker of the Ninth Legislature for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. He started working for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes in 2012 and later went on to receive his degree from Haskell Indian Nations University. He will start law school at the University of Oklahoma College of Law in the fall of 2023. He was elected as a Legislator in 2021.
